The French multinational Michelin, one of the world's largest tire manufacturers, inaugurated a solar power plant in Bahia. According to the company, the system is expected to generate an average of 102 kWh per year and will be used to power structures related to research, biodiversity, and tourism in the region.

With 620 square meters, the plant will serve the Biodiversity Study Center, the Hevea Research Center, and the Ouro Verde Space, an area dedicated to receiving external visitors.

According to Glauce Ferman, Director of Communication & Brands, Sustainability and Public Relations at Michelin South America, this initiative goes far beyond reducing energy costs.

"The project embodies Michelin's commitment to sustainability, reinforcing the integration between economic development, environmental responsibility, and positive impact," Glauce highlighted.

“By using a clean and renewable energy source, Espaço Ouro Verde reduces its carbon footprint and contributes directly to the preservation of the Atlantic Forest and to global energy transition goals,” he added.

Saulo Cardoso, coordinator of Safety, Health and Environment at Michelin's Natural Rubber Plant, emphasized that the initiative reinforces the company's sustainable strategy, expands the use of renewable energy, and contributes to the reduction of CO2 emissions in operations.

"With the power plant in Bahia, Michelin reinforces that its sustainability agenda is based on concrete actions, with a simultaneous focus on decarbonization, operational efficiency, and long-term value creation," he commented.

Company's sustainable strategy

The multinational company reported that the Michelin Ecological Reserve already has other solutions based on renewable energy. Among them is the supply for the so-called Casa do Pacangê, a support structure for biologists and researchers, powered by an autonomous photovoltaic system with battery storage and operation disconnected from the public grid.

In the industrial area, where the natural rubber processing unit is located, Michelin maintains its electricity supply from a 100% renewable source, with i-REC certification.

According to the company, since 2021 all of its industrial sites have operated on green electricity, in line with the emissions reduction and operational efficiency policy adopted globally.

The company aims to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050 and reduce its emissions by 50% by 2030, considering the entire value chain.
