After two decades of waiting for land regularization, residents of the Irmã Dorothy Settlement in Quatis, in the southern part of the state of Rio de Janeiro, will receive solar energy kits through a partnership between the MST (Landless Rural Workers Movement) and UFRJ (Federal University of Rio de Janeiro). The initiative will initially benefit 15 of the 45 families living in the rural community.
Officially recognized by the federal government in 2025, the settlement still lacks an electrical grid throughout its territory. With the installation of photovoltaic systems, residents will be able to use appliances such as refrigerators and washing machines, as well as expand access to communication and the internet.
The project is being developed by the Technology and Management in Agroecology and Agrarian Reform Settlements (Tangará) program, linked to UFRJ (Federal University of Rio de Janeiro). According to the organizers, university technicians will visit the settlement in May to assess the housing conditions and adapt the properties for the installation of the equipment.
The partnership also includes training technicians within the community itself to maintain the solar energy systems. In addition to the Irmã Dorothy project, the plan includes the installation of a solar power plant in the Roseli Nunes settlement, also located in southern Rio de Janeiro state.
In 2025, the families in the settlement officially won ownership of the land after 20 years of mobilization.
