Engie Brasil Energia has contracted WEG to supply the two generating units that will be incorporated into the Jaguara Hydroelectric Plant, a project located on the Rio Grande River, on the border between Minas Gerais and São Paulo.
The acquisition is part of the plant's expansion project, which foresees an investment of R$ 1,2 billion and stems from the generator's participation in the LRCAP (Capacity Reserve Auction in the form of Power) held in March of this year.
The expansion will add 232 MW to the project's installed capacity through the deployment of two 116 MW turbines in existing structures. The new units are scheduled to become operational in 2030.
Currently, Jaguara has an installed capacity of 424 MW, a guaranteed average capacity of 324 MW, and a concession valid until June 2048.
Strengthening the operation
According to Engie, the reinforcement of the plant increases the contribution of hydroelectric generation to meeting demand during periods of higher energy consumption, extending the operational flexibility and reliability of the SIN (National Interconnected System) in a context of advancing energy transition. The project, according to the company, combines operational efficiency gains and sustainability.
Modernization
In addition to capacity expansion, the Jaguara hydroelectric plant is undergoing a broad modernization program that began in July 2023.
The projects represent investments exceeding R$ 500 million, of which approximately R$ 150 million has already been spent.
The project includes the modernization of the four generating units currently in operation, preserving the existing installed capacity and seeking to extend the lifespan, reliability, and operational efficiency of the facility. Completion of this phase is scheduled for 2029.
