Modernization of the electricity sector is a priority, says Bento Albuquerque

We are working with the National Congress to anticipate some measures

“If the modernization of the electricity sector was important and was following its normal course, it has now become a priority”, is what Bento Albuquerque, Minister of Mines and Energy, stated.

The parliamentarian participated in a live broadcast, held this Tuesday (16) by Delta Energia, and spoke about the Federal Government's initiatives and actions in the face of the impacts of the coronavirus pandemic.

“We are working with the National Congress to be able to bring forward some measures, mainly those aimed at modernizing the electricity sector, which are essential to provide greater tranquility to the market”, said the minister.

Among the priorities in the actions to be implemented, he was assertive in stating that the biggest concern should be, at this moment, focused on tariffs.

“We start with the GSF (hydrological risk), which we believe can be overcome in the very short term. We are also starting to discuss the issue of sectoral funds, so that they can ease tariffs in the medium and long term by reducing subsidies”, pointed out Albuquerque, highlighting that, by adopting these measures, the sector will have a predictable and legal recovery. and with the improvement of the legal framework.

Free market

The free market was another point discussed on live. The parliamentarian said that, like more than 30 countries around the world, Brazil will indeed be able to have a 100% free market, highlighting, however, the importance of this process occurring in a controlled and balanced way.

“We are already working with the ANEEL (National Electric Energy Agency), with CCEE (Electric Energy Commercialization Chamber) and with other agents to create a schedule from 2023 onwards, so that we have predictability of when we will reach a 100% free market”, explained Albuquerque.

National Energy Plan 2050

During the virtual meeting, Bento Albuquerque also addressed the importance of the 2050 National Energy Plan. “We finally have a plan and we will soon have it in Public Consultation. It had been idle since 2013, but we had made it a priority,” he commented.

Privatization of Eletrobras

The minister revealed that he has been having daily meetings about the Eletrobras privatization process. He once again defended the sale of control of the company so that it can have a greater investment capacity.

“Eletrobras is losing its ability to compete in the market and we know that it is a very active market”, he states. According to the parliamentarian, the company is fundamental to the electricity sector, however, if it remains state-owned, in eight years its share in the country's generation, which is around 30%, will remain at 15% and in transmission, which approaches 50%, will be reduced to 30%.
