Cuts in power generation from wind and solar plants caused by oversupply of electricity could reach 40 GW every year between 2027 and 2030, according to an estimate presented this Tuesday (7) by ONS (National Electric System Operator).
The projection is part of the 2026-2030 Energy Operation Plan and indicates that so-called energy cuts are expected to become more frequent and intense in the coming years.
According to the Operator, Brazil will continue to produce more energy than the system's demand is able to absorb in certain periods, thus requiring a limitation of generation to maintain the balance of the electricity grid and guarantee security of supply.
According to the ONS (National System Operator), these power cuts tend to be concentrated between 7 am and 15 pm, the period of greatest availability of solar and wind power generation. Meanwhile, restrictions due to electrical reliability (related to the security of the transmission system's operation) are expected to lose importance over the analyzed period, falling from 7% of hours in 2027 to 4% in 2030.
Increased demand and expanded transmission could alleviate the situation.
Despite the expected increase in cuts due to oversupply, the ONS projects a gradual reduction in the average volume of restricted energy over the period.
According to the Operator, this trend will be driven by three main factors: the growth in demand for electricity, the expansion of the grid, transmission and the slowdown in the entry of new power plants.
