With the capacity to produce 36.744 cubic meters per day, the São Leopoldo biomethane plant, located in the Porto Alegre Metropolitan Region (RS), has begun operations.
The unit uses the landfill of CRVR (Companhia Riograndense de Valorização de Resíduos), controlled by the Solví Group, to produce biogas destined for the industrial and transportation markets.
The project received R$ 76,4 million from the National Bank for Economic and Social Development (BNDES), which accounted for 80,1% of the total investment.
The funding combines R$ 61,1 million from the Climate Fund and R$ 15,3 million from the BNDES Finem line of credit. The project employs a purification system supplied by a national manufacturer, with local technical assistance.
According to the bank, the new plant from the Solví Group contributes to diversifying the energy matrix and expanding the supply of renewable alternatives capable of replacing fossil fuels, such as diesel and natural gas, in different segments of the economy.
Biomethane gains ground.
The start of operations at the new plant comes at a time of strengthening prospects for biomethane in the country. In the Biofuels Market Analysis – Base Year 2025, recently released by EPE (Energy Research Company), the renewable fuel appears among the highlights of the Brazilian market.
In the study, one of the points emphasized is the evolution of biogas and biomethane, whose energy supply increased almost 40 times between 2010 and 2025, driven by public policies and regulatory advances, according to the state-owned company, which yesterday, the 16th, celebrated its 22nd anniversary.
The EPE publication also dedicates a special article to the opportunities associated with biomethane. Among the aspects highlighted are its role in the circular economy, through the use of agricultural and urban waste, as well as the prospects related to certification mechanisms, social inclusion, and the replacement of fossil fuels.
The purpose of this document is to provide input for energy planning and to support the formulation of public policies aimed at expanding renewable fuels.
Optimism with reservations
A recent assessment by XP Investimentos also reinforces a positive outlook for the segment. The platform states that it remains optimistic about the expansion potential of the Brazilian biomethane market, supported by increased confidence among market participants in both demand and the capacity to expand supply.
According to the firm's analysis, Brazil has the potential to become one of the industry's main growth markets in the coming years. XP emphasizes, however, that the consolidation of this scenario will depend on several factors.
These include the efficient implementation of the regulatory framework — including the operationalization of CGOBs (Certificates of Guarantee of Origin for Biomethane) —, the expansion of consumer markets beyond the legal requirements for mandatory blending, and the economic viability of new projects.
Issues such as the availability of raw materials, economies of scale, and overcoming infrastructure bottlenecks are also cited as important conditions for the country to transform its high potential into effective production expansion.
