Canal Solar - Solar energy in summer: what's myth and what's truth?

With summer approaching, many questions arise about the performance of solar energy systems. After all, do longer days and higher temperatures automatically mean more energy generation? Or can excessive heat reduce the efficiency of the equipment?

Between common myths and technical truths, understanding how solar energy behaves during the summer is fundamental both for those who already have a system installed and for those who are thinking about investing in the technology.

In this article, we've gathered the main questions about generation, efficiency, climate, maintenance, and design to separate myth from fact when it comes to solar energy during the hottest season of the year, which begins next Sunday.

Do more hours of sunshine in the summer tend to increase the generation volume of a system?

🟡 TRUE, but with reservations.

Summer has longer days and higher solar radiation, which tends to increase the amount of energy generated by a photovoltaic system. However, this gain can be partially offset by high temperatures, which reduce the efficiency of the modules.

Furthermore, during periods of very high generation, the system may suffer limitations imposed by the inverter, such as power clipping, which prevents all potentially available energy from being converted into useful electricity.

Do very high temperatures improve the efficiency and performance of photovoltaic modules?

🔴 MYTH.

Solar panels perform best with more solar radiation, not more heat. Elevated temperatures reduce the electrical efficiency of the modules due to the temperature coefficient, which causes performance losses as the panel heats up.

Does solar power generation in the summer depend more on the quality of the project than on the weather?

🟢 TRUE.

A well-designed system, with correct inclination, orientation, ventilation, and equipment sizing, tends to perform well regardless of the season. Generally speaking, a poorly executed design can compromise generation even under favorable conditions.

Do frequent summer rains eliminate the need for maintenance and cleaning of the panels?

🔴 MYTH.

Rain helps remove some surface dirt, but it doesn't replace professional cleaning. Dust, soot, organic residue, and dirt accumulated on edges aren't completely removed by rain alone, making periodic maintenance necessary.

Do solar systems generate energy in the summer on days with partly cloudy skies?

🟢 TRUE.

Even with clouds, there is enough diffuse radiation to generate energy. Although production is lower than on completely sunny days, the system continues to operate normally.

Does using air conditioning at night negate the benefits of a conventional photovoltaic system?

🔴 MYTH.

Solar energy doesn't work on a time-of-use basis, but rather on a monthly balance. All excess energy generated during the day is fed into the grid and becomes a credit, which automatically offsets nighttime air conditioning consumption.

Can high temperatures cause inverters and other equipment to shut down due to overheating?

🟢 TRUE.

Inverters have thermal protection systems. In poorly ventilated environments, installed without proper manufacturer guidelines, or exposed to excessive heat, power reductions or temporary shutdowns may occur to protect the equipment.
