Solar energy accounted for almost three-quarters of the expansion of Brazil's electricity grid in 2026. Between January and August, 75 new photovoltaic plants entered commercial operation and added 3,52 GW of power to the system, equivalent to 72,6% of all capacity added during the period.

In total, the energy matrix gained 4,85 GW in the first eight months of the year, with the commissioning of 91 new power plants, according to data from... ANEEL (National Electric Energy Agency).

After solar power, thermal power plants had the second largest share in the expansion, with 1,09 GW added by six projects. Following that are three wind farms, with 184,5 MW; five small hydroelectric plants (PCHs), with 52,7 MW; and two hydroelectric generating plants (CGHs), with 7,6 MW.

Photovoltaic energy also led in the number of new projects. Of the 91 plants that began commercial operation by the end of August, 75 are solar, equivalent to 82,4% of the total.

August saw almost 2 GW of new capacity.

In August alone, the expansion of Brazil's electricity grid reached 1.968,37 MW, according to... ANEELIn total, 20 new plants entered commercial operation during the period. Mato Grosso do Sul saw the largest expansion in the month, with 891 MW, followed by Pará, with 629,37 MW.

In the period from January to August, new power plants began commercial operation in 15 states. Mato Grosso do Sul also leads in this segment, with 894,2 MW added to the energy matrix. Following are Pará, with 649,37 MW, and Rio Grande do Norte, with 639,57 MW.

Centralized capacity exceeds 220 GW.

In addition to the new plants that began operating throughout 2026, the data from ANEEL Data shows that the country's total centralized generation capacity has already exceeded 220 GW. As of September 8th, Brazil had a total of 220.662,7 MW of monitored power, according to SIGA (Generation Information System). ANEELOf this total in operation, 84,67% corresponded to renewable sources.

SIGA gathers information on operating power plants and licensed projects at different stages of implementation. The monitoring of the monthly expansion of supply is carried out by... ANEEL based on inspection information and data provided by agents in the Rapeel (Monitoring Report of Electric Power Generation Projects).
