The electricity bill will continue to be more expensive for Brazilian consumers. This Friday (27), the ANEEL (National Electric Energy Agency) reported that the country will continue to activate the red tariff flag, at level 1, in July.

This means that – as was the case in June – electricity bills will continue to be charged an additional R$4,46 for every 100 kWh consumed. The reason for maintaining this additional charge is the continued scenario of below-average inflows throughout the country – which reduces energy generation at hydroelectric plants.

“This situation tends to increase energy generation costs, due to the need to activate more expensive sources for generation, such as thermoelectric plants”, highlights the ANEEL.

About tariff flags

The system tariff flags was created by ANEEL in 2015 to indicate to consumers the costs of energy generation in Brazil, considering factors such as the availability of water resources, the advancement of renewable sources, as well as the activation of more expensive generation sources such as thermoelectric plants.

On the electricity bill, the colors of the flags in effect during the month indicate:

  • Green: no additional cost;
  • Yellow: moderate extra cost;
  • Red (levels 1 and 2): higher additional cost, reflecting the use of more expensive generation sources, such as thermoelectric plants.

The model's objective is to alert about the real costs of energy generation. With the activation of the red flag level 1 in June, ANEEL seeks to reinforce the importance of conscious use of electricity and attention to consumption habits during the dry season, which began between April and May.
