The Bem Viver Refuge, located in Betim (MG), is looking for a manufacturer or distributor in the electrical sector that can donate batteries and a hybrid inverter for the installation of a solar energy system on site.
The initiative aims to ensure the continued operation of essential equipment during power outages, primarily freezers used for storing food and veterinary equipment.
The need became urgent after a storm hit in the last week of October, leaving the institution without electricity for 32 hours. During that period, approximately 50 kg of meat intended for animal feed was lost.
The facility is home to approximately 80 wild animals, at least ten of which depend directly on the stock of frozen meat.
Currently, the institution has three freezers, with a storage capacity of 1.200 kg of food, in addition to a donated cold storage chamber with a capacity of eight tons.
“We have three freezers here for storing the meat, so we have over a ton stored. We must have lost an average of about 50 kilos of meat, but of all the bad things that could have happened, this is the least bad. It wasn't the high amount we imagined,” reported Felipe Coutinho, veterinarian and founder of the refuge.
The initiative to make the solution viable already has the support of Gleisson Abreu, an electrical engineer and co-owner of Aquila Energia.
After learning about the case, the professional contacted the institution and offered to develop the engineering project and install a hybrid battery-powered system.
The proposal is to utilize the 12 photovoltaic modules already installed in the shelter and adapt the structure to allow for the supply of energy to priority equipment during blackouts.
For this to happen, however, it is still necessary to secure the donation of equipment, especially the batteries and the hybrid inverter.
“We are appealing to a manufacturer of hybrid batteries and inverters to make this donation. Then we will use our engineering expertise to solve the problem definitively,” said Abreu.
In addition to preserving food, a continuous power supply is important for procedures performed in the Animal Treatment Unit (UTA), where equipment that depends on electricity is used.
According to Coutinho, interruptions can compromise veterinary care and procedures that require specific conditions, especially when they involve anesthetized wild animals.
Installing a power storage system would allow priority equipment to remain operational during grid failures. The autonomy will depend on the battery capacity and the loads that need to be supplied.
