EPE (Energy Research Company) announced this Thursday (13) that the registration of hydroelectric projects for the New Energy Auction A-5 broke a historic record of registrations. The deadline for registration ended on February 7.

225 projects with power below 50 MW were registered, totaling an installed capacity of 2.884 MW. The number surpasses the previous mark of the 5 A-2022 Auction, when 90 projects totaled 1.516 MW of registered power.

Announced by the MME (Ministry of Mines and Energy) through the Normative Ordinance No. 95/GM/MME/2024, the contest is scheduled to take place on July 25, 2025.

The highlight was the PCHs (Small Hydroelectric Power Plants), which registered 173 projects, totaling 2.487 MW – which represents 86% of the energy registered in the auction. In the last auction, 80 projects had been registered.

CGHs (Hydroelectric Generating Plants) totaled 45 projects and 128 MW of power, while UHEs (Hydroelectric Power Plants) registered seven registrations and 269 MW.

For Alessandra Torres, president of ABRAPCH (Brazilian Association of PCHs and CGHs), the record registration reflects the large volume of projects that have been held back for years and the growing interest of investors in the sector.

“For us, it was a very important step to see the Ministry of Mines and Energy open the auction, demonstrating that the agency recognizes the need and importance of promoting this source,” said the executive.
