China produces solar module with more than 24% efficiency

Heterojunction cells are expected to capture part of the market hitherto dominated by PERC cells

The Chinese company Hanergy, specialized in thin film technology, announced the production of a photovoltaic module with an efficiency of over 24%. The module was developed with the silicon heterojunction technology.

The new efficiency record announced puts Hanergy ahead of Japan's Kaneka, also specialized in thin film technology.

The Chinese company's new product is manufactured with N-type crystalline silicon covered with a layer of amorphous thin film, a layer of carbon alloy thin film and an additional layer of passivation.

The company states, however, that the new efficiency record was produced on a laboratory scale and the product is not yet commercially produced.

Heterojunction technology, although more than two decades old, has only now begun to gain the attention of manufacturers due to the expiration of previously existing patents.

Many modules with this technology are entering the market in 2019 and are promised for 2020.

Heterojunction cells are expected to capture part of the market hitherto dominated by PERC cells.

At the same time as researching and developing heterojunction technologies, Hanergy dedicates a large part of its effort to the production of CIGS-type photovoltaic modules (non-silicon thin films), with modules already commercial with efficiencies greater than 17%.
