A ANEEL (National Electric Energy Agency) updated data on the migration potential for the Free Energy Market. In total, 21.490 consumers declare the intention to leave the Captive Market up to 2025, being that 94,7% are small and medium-sized companies with consumption below 500 kW. If all these units complete their adhesion, they will be added 1.385 average megawatts.

In December, the numbers pointed to 14.632 loads potential migrating to Mercado Livre by 2025. As of March 31, 2024, there are already 21.490 units, which represents a addition of 6.858 loads in just three months, variation of 46,87 %. The forecast of ANEEL is that 22 to 27 thousand consumers will migrate for the retail market by the end of the year.

According to the CCEE (Electric Energy Trading Chamber), 5.360 consumers joined in the segment in first quarter this year, with emphasis on the segments of commerce (1.544) and services (1.328).

It is important to highlight that the difference between the numbers released by ANEEL and CCEE. The first refers to the migration potential, while the second represents consumers who already completed the migration.

The Free Energy Market is a competitive environment in the electricity sector in which consumers have the freedom to choose the supplier and negotiate energy contracts, which results in a potential reduction in the electricity bill.

Since January, Mercado Livre has been open to all small and medium-sized companies connected in medium and high voltage, also known as group A, thanks to the publication of Ordinance No. 50, from September 2022, by the Ministry of Mines and Energy.

Since then, the traders have intensified campaigns to raise awareness among small business managers about the opportunities offered by Mercado Livre, targeting potential customers in the hotel, supermarket, commercial, services, industrial sectors, among others.

To migrate to Mercado Livre, consumers need to look for the consultancy from a retail trader. There are more than 100 companies available operating in this field.

According to the Brazilian Association of Energy Traders (ABRACEEL), Mercado Livre consumers saved R$48 billion in electricity costs in 2023. Accumulated historical gains exceed $ 339 billion.
