O Brazil registered entry into commercial operation de 291 new centralized generation plants in 2023 with to over 10,3 GW of installed capacity.

This is the highest annual growth in the historical series of ANEEL (National Electric Energy Agency), started in 1997.

Altogether, the wind farms contributed to the implementation of 140 new ventures, with 4,9 GW of installed capacity and 47,65% of the matrix expansion.

A solar energy came second, with 104 photovoltaic plants and 4,07 GW installed in the period, as shown in the image below:

The new plants had their works completed in 19 states located in the five Brazilian regions. The states of Bahia (2 GW), Rio Grande do Norte (2,6 GW) and Minas Gerais (2,27 GW) recorded expansion above 2,02 GW.

Currently, the Brazil has 199,3 GW of installed capacity from more than 23,5 thousand plants of electrical power generation, according to ANEEL. Of this total in operation, approximately 83,6 % of the plants are considered renewable.

Projections for solar energy

To 2024, solar energy should attract BRL 38,9 billion in new investments in Brazil, adding the centralized and distributed generation plants, according to projections from ABSOLAR (Brazilian Photovoltaic Solar Energy Association).

According to the entity's assessment, solar energy should also generate more than 281,6 thousand new jobs throughout the year, in addition to providing extra revenue of more than R$11,7 billion to public coffers.

The association also believes that more than 9,3 GW of installed power should be added in the country, reaching a total of more than 45 GW, would represent a growth of more than 25% over the just over 36 GW.

Of this total, approximately 31 GW must come from distributed generation systems and little more than 14 GW of centralized generation plants.
