O minister of MME (Ministry of Mines and Energy), Alexandre Silveira, said that the electricity bill of Brazilian consumers may suffer a reduction of 2,5% to 10% in September, depending on each state.
According to the minister, this drop is due to the fact that Federal Government has released um consortium of banks a advance part of the resources that would be paid by Eletrobras over almost 30 years for the electricity bill.
A approval was published by MME in an extra edition of DOU (Official Gazette of the Union) this Tuesday (06). THE contract was signed by CCEE (Electricity Trading Chamber) with five financial institutions.
In all, Banco do Brasil, Itaú, Bradesco, BTG and Santander will contribute R$7,8 billion in CDE (Energy Development Account) – fund with contributions from private consumers aimed at promoting the country’s energy development.
O funds will be used to pay off loans currently paid by energy consumers, thus reducing energy tariffs.
Those loans involve credit operations carried out by electricity distributors, during the height of the pandemic and the water crisis.
Os loans are included in the electricity bill and, therefore, weigh on the tariffs paid by Brazilian consumers.
In addition to the advance value, also will be used to reduce consumers' electricity bills by approximately R$4 billion in balance that was already in the accounts Covid e water scarcity, collected from consumers in recent months. Thus, the total released will reach R$11,8 billion.
“We are paying off these two bills, Covid and Water Scarcity, which were like a bomb with a delayed effect for the consumer (…) With the settlement, we will have up to 10% reduction in the energy bill, in addition to having saved R$ 500 million in interest.”, said Silveira during the press conference.
