Electroluminescence is a powerful and essential tool for ensuring the quality of photovoltaic modules. This is the statement by Rafhael Augusto, technical support engineer for GD/GC projects at JA Solar.

During a lecture at Canal Conecta, he highlighted that the electroluminescence test allows detailed analysis of the panels and early identification of faults that could compromise the efficiency and durability of solar plants.

“When we polarize the module in a dark environment, it emits light that is invisible to the naked eye, but which can be captured by appropriate equipment, cameras with specialized lenses and filters,” he explained.

According to the engineer, the effect of electroluminescence generates a monochromatic image that varies from light to dark tones. “This variation is crucial, as it allows us to identify different types of anomalies in the modules, such as microcracks and manufacturing defects, which directly impact the performance and safety of the system.”

JA Solar aims to develop centralized generation portfolio in Brazil

Customized quality criteria for modules

Augusto also highlighted that each manufacturer has its own quality criteria, which determine whether a panel is approved or rejected. JA Solar, for example, performs electroluminescence inspections on 100% of the modules produced, in an automated manner and at various stages of production, both on the cells and on the modules. In addition, the company adopts different criteria for N-Type and P-Type modules, due to differences in the manufacturing process.
