A fire broke out on Friday (30) in a container containing Tesla Megapack batteries during testing at the Victoria Big Battery in Geelong, Victoria state, Australia – according to the CNBC website. The incident happened just days after the battery – which will be the largest in the country when completed – received its official registration.

In a statement, Louis de Sambucy, managing director of Neoen Australia – the company that worked with Tesla and AusNet Services to develop the project – said no one was injured and the site had been evacuated. The cause has not yet been released. “Neoen and Tesla are working closely with emergency services on site to manage the situation. The site has been disconnected from the grid and there will be no impact on the electricity supply. We will provide updates and further details as they become available,” he explained.

Victoria Big Battery will provide services to wind and solar farms to help meet peak demand. Each megapack has around 3 MWh of lithium-ion battery storage. The aim of the program is to help Victoria meet a 50% renewable energy target by 2030.
