Fraunhofer ISE tests grid-forming photovoltaic inverters

A procedure developed in partnership with German operators assesses technological readiness and helps define standards for the energy transition.

The German institute Fraunhofer ISE completed the “GFM Benchmark” project, in partnership with the four German transmission operators, in which it developed a test procedure for grid-forming inverters, which is the ability to assume functions of forming and stabilizing the electrical grid.

In total, seven companies participated in the tests, which subjected equipment to critical conditions described in the new test procedure, such as sudden frequency variations and short circuits.

According to the laboratory, the results showed similar behaviors in some points, but relevant differences in others, allowing optimization recommendations for almost all devices.

"The devices exhibited similar behavior under clearly defined requirements. In other cases, however, there were significant differences, and we were able to provide manufacturers with optimization suggestions for almost all devices," explained Roland Singer, Project Manager at Fraunhofer ISE.

The conclusions are already influencing the European standardization process: part of the findings formed the basis for the VDE FNN technical note “Grid-forming properties”, which defines requirements and verification methods.

Test results will be published anonymously and presented in the 24th Wind and Solar Integration Workshop, on October 8th.
