O Free Energy Market must present growth of 1% per year until the end of the decade, with consumer participation surpassing the 38% in 2024 and reaching 44% of the SIN load (National Electrical System) in 2030.
The projection is part of a lifting of Thymos Energia, a Brazilian business consultancy specializing in the electrical energy sector.
“Units connected at medium and high voltage represent a significant portion of potential consumers with small or medium energy demands”, said Mayra Guimarães, head of the company's prices and market studies.
The professional highlights that the opening of the Free Energy Market for more Group A consumers at the beginning of this year It is one of factors that help explain projected growth, since this audience corresponds, above all, to small and medium-sized commercial and industrial establishments, such as condominiums, bakeries, supermarket chains and pharmacies.
“We now hope for progress in this opening and the definition of a calendar to serve low voltage consumers, which is the majority of the Brazilian population”, added Mayra.
According to data from the HUG (Brazilian Association of Energy Traders), the Free Energy Market had, in March of this year with 40.578 consumer units – which represented an increase of 28% compared to the same month in 2023.
In total, the free energy contracting environment was responsible, last month, for an energy consumption of 26.234 MWmed, corresponding to 36% of total consumption.
Thymos Energia emphasizes that the scenario foreseen in the study presents a big challenge for the market, as potential new customers in this market are spread across the country.
“Often, they are unaware that there are other ways of contracting energy outside the regulated environment, in addition to the economic benefits that this change can generate on their electricity bill. The adoption of this segment of consumers will require a larger commercial task force on the part of agents in the retail energy market”, highlighted Mayra.

Perspectives and new definitions in the electricity sector
According to Thymos Energy, Today, there are some regulatory definitions that need to be advanced so that the Free Energy Market becomes accessible to low voltage consumers.
The consultancy assesses that the freedom to choose an energy supplier for all Brazilians would reduce electricity bills and encourage competition.
ABRACEEL estimates total annual savings of R$35,8 billion per year, if you compare what units connected to low voltage pay in the captive market with the prices charged in the free environment.
“Today a good portion of the electricity bill in the regulated environment is made up of subsidies. There is parity in charges between the two markets, free and captive. So, it is only fair that the consumer choose the best option, according to their needs and preferences”, said João Carlos Mello, CEO of Thymos Energia.
