A Gerdau and Newave Energy carried out, this Thursday (08), the signing of the installation protocol of the Arinos Solar Park, located in Arinos (MG), in a ceremony held in the capital of Minas Gerais.

The enterprise, which has the capacity to achieve 420 MWp, will also include an energy substation. The plant is one of the projects included in the list of PAC (Growth Acceleration Program) investments announced by the federal government for the state of Minas Gerais.

According to the company, the plant is an initiative of Newave Energia, a renewable energy platform in which Gerdau holds a 33,33% stake through its new business division, Gerdau Next.

With a total investment estimated at around R$1,5 billion, the project is expected to be completed at the end of 2024 and create approximately 4 direct and indirect jobs, which will contribute to income and local development for the coming decades. .

The solar energy capacity installed in the complex is the equivalent of 7% of Gerdau's annual electricity consumption in Brazil, based on 2022 production, and provides an estimated reduction of up to 22.000 tons of CO₂ per year.

For Gustavo Werneck, CEO of Gerdau, this is an important step for the company in its search for greater competitiveness and sustainability of its operations.

“Gerdau already has one of the lowest global averages of greenhouse gas emissions, being lower than the global average for the steel sector, and the Arinos Solar Park will contribute to our commitment to further reduce our GHG emissions”, he highlighted. .

“Furthermore, I reinforce that low-carbon steel is an essential component for the decarbonization of the planet, as it is fundamental for the development of sustainable infrastructure and renewable energy technologies,” added Werneck.

According to the company, once the project is operational, 30% of the volume of renewable energy produced in the project will be used to produce Gerdau steel in the country. The energy volume corresponds to 34 MWm, equivalent to the consumption of a plant with a capacity of 400 thousand tons per year.
