Government publishes MP to alleviate impact of coronavirus on the electricity sector

The resources will exempt the electricity bill of between 9 and 10 million families for three months

President Jairiimpact of the coronavirus on the electricity sector Bolsonaro signed this Wednesday (08) a provisional measure which will allocate R$900 million to pay the electricity bills of low-income consumers included in the Social Tariff program.

The MP, published in the DOU (Official Gazette of the Union), is part of the government's actions to face the economic consequences of the new coronavirus pandemic. The resources will exempt the electricity bill of a universe of between 9 and 10 million families per three months, from April 1st to June 30th, up to a limit of 220 kWh.

In addition to bringing benefits to the most vulnerable consumers, the measure addresses the urgent problem faced by the sector, which is the cash flow difficulties of electricity distributors, responsible for collecting market revenue.

According to the MME (Ministry of Mines and Energy), the MP will enable distributors to continue honoring their commitments to other sector agents, preserving the sustainability of the electricity sector. In addition, it will ease tariff pressure on consumers in 2020, resulting from extraordinary costs inserted in the context of the Covid-19 pandemic.
