Although photovoltaic panels are the main focus when talking about solar energy, field data shows a reality that is rarely discussed: around two thirds of problems in photovoltaic systems are related not to the modules, but to the connectors and cables – components of the so-called eBOS. The information comes from the manufacturer Stäubli.

“The eBOS (Electrical Balance of System) represents all the electrical components located between the panels and the inverter, that is, it is responsible for ensuring that the energy generated by the modules is transferred effectively, with the lowest possible level of loss”, explains Willian Mas, New Business Development Manager at Stäubli.

According to him, even though it is essential for the efficiency of the photovoltaic system, eBOS is still treated as a supporting role in many projects. “Incorrectly dimensioned connectors, low-quality cables or faults in electrical structures can compromise the entire system's performance, generating both financial and environmental losses. On the other hand, optimizing eBOS can lead to significant gains in efficiency, longevity and safety”, he highlights.

In Mass’s assessment, the main reason why eBOS is still treated as a supporting component in many projects is the low initial cost of this type of component. “People tend to neglect it because it is a very low capex. The investment in cabling and connectors, for example, represents on average 1% of the total installation value. The connector alone is even less,” he comments.

The problem, he says, is the impact that this negligence can have in the long term. “Since it is cheap, people leave it aside, but the potential risk is enormous. In terms of operational costs, a simple stoppage of a string in a centralized generation due to a poorly assembled connector or poorly positioned cable can generate considerable losses. The cost of retrofitting is high, sometimes even higher than replacing a module,” he adds.

“With an eye on this demand, companies like dusty have been investing in specific solutions to strengthen this link. The company offers a range of high-quality eBOS products – including Y-harnesses, fused cables and robust connectors – designed to make electrical balance one of the main assets of the solar power system”, concludes Mass.
