INEL (National Institute of Clean Energy) released a statement in defense of the autonomy of ANEEL (National Electric Energy Agency), following public demands made by the MME (Ministry of Mines and Energy) for the agency to speed up the process of renewing distributor concessions.
Last Tuesday (16), during the inauguration of two new directors of the agency, Minister Alexandre Silveira stated that the analysis must be conducted in a technical manner, with no room for "politicking". He added that the renewal of 19 distributor contracts with concessions about to expire could unlock up to R$120 billion in investments by 2030.
For INEL, Brazil needs to ensure robust and continuous investments to ensure the reliability, modernization, and expansion of its electrical infrastructure. However, the entity emphasizes that this need should not be confused with political pressure on the regulatory agency.
“A ANEEL, throughout its history, has consolidated itself as an independent, technical and internationally renowned body, precisely because it acts with rigor, impartiality and well-founded criteria”, highlighted the institute.
INEL reinforced its call for respect for the agency's autonomy, arguing that the credibility of the electricity sector depends on trust in institutions capable of making technical, transparent decisions that are immune to political interference. It also declared support for the agency's technical departments. ANEEL: “The prudence demonstrated by the agency's board, in prioritizing consistent and well-founded analyses, should be seen as a pillar of regulatory security, and not as an obstacle to investment.”
The note concludes by advocating cooperation between the government, Congress, agencies, and civil society, rather than tensions that could weaken the governance of the electricity sector.
The Director-General of ANEELSandoval Feitosa also refuted the minister's statements. He stated that he did not understand the criticism as directed at the Agency, "because there is no element that would lead to this behavior by the agency's leaders."
“I do not accept, under any circumstances, this statement that the ANEEL "It's slow, and even less so this political issue. I don't understand where that came from. After all, Aneel is not a political body. If it's not a political body, it also doesn't engage in politics, nor does it use the pejorative term 'politicking'," he told reporters, according to the Poder360 website.
