According to the study Global Market Outlook For Solar Power 2022-2026, Brazil could become one of the main global markets in the coming years. Being able to achieve 54 GW of total capacity by 2026.

Within this scenario, theChallenges and opportunities for large-scale solar plants become an urgent issue and it was the theme central to the discussions in the last edition of the Solar Talk, the podcast of Canal Solar.

O 108th episode included the participation of Juliana Santos, technical director of Nextracker for Latin America and Nelson Falcao, senior director and business development at the company.

“A solar is the most competitive after hydroelectric. There is abundant sunshine in Brazil and it will occupy, in fact it is already occupying, the role of generating energy from demand growth”, commented Falcão.

“A hydroelectric It's that base, it won't increase anymore, has already reached the ceiling. And as you go growing consumption of energy in Brazil, who will answer This new consumption is the solar”, he added.

Investment in R&D in tracker

Keeping an eye on this scenario, the Nexttracker invested in P&D (Research and Development) and created a solution to minimize landscaping, developing the XTR which is a tracker that adapts to terrain variations.

Juliana commented that some of the challenges for centralized plants are in relation to irregularity of land and restrictions on how to move earth and dispose of it.

It was thinking about these points that the company developed the technology, not interfering in the field, just installing the solar plant. “One of the technological barriers overcome by Nextracker was having the ability to place a tracker up to 130 meters long, following the natural relief of the land”, comments the engineer.

Juliana also added that with the technology can eliminate 80 to 90% the necessity of landscaping of a piece of land.

“When we talk about a Plot whatever very bumpy, it is possible to eliminate 80 to 90% the need for earthworks”, pointed out the engineer.

How to have a financially viable project?

Another point explored in the program was how to have a project with a viable cost. Falcão highlighted that there are some points to reach a balance: connection, energy cost and tax uncertainty.

A connection concerns the uncertainty about the number of plants which will be installed due to the approximately 40 GW that will be built in the coming years.

More than half of the energy produced in Brazil comes from source hydroelectric and cost is low, when the reservoir volume decreases, the energy remains more expensive and makes the government think about other alternativesif Incentives to other sources. This factor contributes to the low price of energy.

"You don't end of 2022 os reservoir levels were very low and the government was discussing some way to resolve this. Even thinking about subsidies to accelerate the solar plant construction. But it rained and reservoir levels rose, so the price of energy did not increase,” said Falcão.

A tax uncertainty refers to unstable environment because tax reform and how it could affect the solar energy segment, it is not known what the tax equation will look like.

Juliana completes the list by talking about the low level of maturity in the solar market: “We can say that the Brazilian photovoltaic market is heading towards its tenth year, but we still have a very high level of immaturity in the market and then when you are going to make a comparison of LCOE (Levelized Cost of Energy), basic issues are not considered.

    Congratulations on the informative content.
Many people still don't know that they can receive solar energy through the Cemig network and other distributors even without solar panels.
I register to release these discounts authorized since 2022.

Anyone who wants to eliminate their energy bill without construction work, without signs, without bureaucracy can call me from all over Brazil.
