Held last weekend in Ribeirão Preto (SP), João Rock, one of the biggest music festivals in the country, had a structure designed to minimize environmental impacts.
For the third consecutive year, the event offset its electricity consumption with renewable energy credits through a partnership with Tereos — a company that operates in the production of clean energy from sugarcane biomass.
The credits, certified by the international I-REC system, ensured the traceability of the renewable energy source. The event also featured recycling policies – which transformed organic waste from the food court into fertilizer through composting.
The organization expected to recycle more than 15 tons of solid waste. “Actions like this also have a social character: part of the aluminum tabs collected will be donated to charity organizations in Ribeirão Preto,” the event organizers said.
Greenpeace Presence
The environmental NGO Greenpeace was also present at João Rock with an igloo-shaped structure, measuring 6×6 meters, functioning as a lounge resting place and distribution point for gifts and information.
The idea was to encourage the public to reflect on their choices and attitudes. “Our planet needs a voice, actions and solutions. We fight for systemic changes in defense of the environment, promoting knowledge and provoking reflection for better attitudes,” said Luís Guilherme de Oliveira, Greenpeace partnership analyst.

João Rock is a music festival held annually in Ribeirão Preto (SP) since 2002. The event brings together several rock, rap, reggae and MPB artists, and is considered one of the largest festivals of its kind in the country.
The name “João Rock” is a tribute to drummers of rock bands who share the name João or John, such as João Barone (Paralamas do Sucesso) and John Bonham (Led Zeppelin).
In this year's edition, the festival brought together around 60 thousand people for performances by bands such as Planet Hemp, Barão Vermelho and BaianaSystem, according to data released by the event's organizers.
