The MME (Ministry of Mines and Energy) announced this Thursday (8) the opening of a public consultation on the PDE (Ten-Year Energy Expansion Plan) 2036.
This initiative aims to allow society to help define the future of the Brazilian energy sector, as the document presents the main perspectives for energy supply and demand in Brazil for the next ten years.
In this edition, the document is organized into four chapters. The first presents an overview of the plan, highlighting energy security, energy transition, and sector investments. Chapters 2 and 3 detail energy demand and supply, respectively.
Chapter 4, entitled "Issues for the Future of the Brazilian Energy Sector," is open to participation from institutions, companies, experts, and citizens, who can suggest relevant topics to be addressed in the coming years.
The content of this chapter will be consolidated in the final version of the report, based on contributions received during the public consultation and the technical evaluation by the Ministry of Mines and Energy (MME) and the Energy Research Company (EPE).
PDE 2036 Projections
The Brazilian Energy Development Plan 2036 (PDE 2036) estimates investments of R$ 3,3 trillion between 2027 and 2036 to increase supply and modernize Brazil's energy infrastructure. During this period, the implementation of an additional 31,900 kilometers of transmission lines is also planned.
In the electricity sector, consumption is projected to grow by approximately 3,4% annually, reaching 979 TWh in 2036. Electricity generation is expected to reach 1.133 TWh in 2036, compared to 829 TWh this year.
The share of renewable sources, in turn, should increase from 50,2% to 51,2% of the total energy mix, which includes sectors such as transport, industry and residences.
In the electricity matrix, renewables remain close to 90%, with the growth of solar and wind power generation. According to the forecast, these two sources will account for about a third of electricity generation in 2036, compared to 28,1% in 2026.
In terms of storage, 7,2 GW of battery systems are expected. Reversible hydroelectric plants appear for the first time in the indicative expansion of the PDE (Energy Development Plan), with 2 GW projected. These plants also serve an energy storage function.
It was also indicated that electricity consumption by data centers is expected to increase from 3 TWh in 2026 to 30 TWh in 2036.
MMGD (micro and mini-distributed generation), in turn, should gain even more ground: installed capacity is expected to increase from 50 GW in 2026 to 92 GW in 2036, representing a significant expansion in the number of consumers who produce their own energy.
How can I participate in the public consultation?
To participate in the public consultation, interested parties may submit their contributions until November 6th, through... from the MME portal and by the platform Participatory Brazil.
