The increase in demand for electricity due to the installation of new data centers, growth of the fleet of electric vehicles and H2V (green hydrogen) projects should stimulate the growth of the free energy market in the coming years in the country.

The assessment is from ABSOLAR (Brazilian Association of Photovoltaic Solar Energy), which discussed the future of the solar source in the ACL (Free Contracting Environment), in an event held last week in São Paulo (SP), with several specialists, businesspeople and public authorities.

For the entity, however, Brazil still needs to advance in the regulation of electricity storage, with the maintenance of the schedule of the Capacity Reserve Auction specifically for batteries, scheduled for November of this year, and to address the cuts in renewable generation (curtailment), with due compensation to entrepreneurs, as provided for by law.

According to Rodrigo Sauaia, executive president of ABSOLAR, Brazil currently has around 72 thousand consumers in the ACL, representing almost 41% of the country's total electricity consumption, that is, more than a third of all electricity consumed in Brazil is traded in the free energy market, according to data from CCEE (Electric Energy Trading Chamber).

“And the trend is for growth in the free market, mainly with the migration of consumers from the retail profile, which led the expansion last year, when the market was opened to the high voltage group”, he explained.

“The ACL may surpass the captive market itself by the end of this year in terms of electricity consumption, with the prospect of increased demand for new battery technologies, green hydrogen and artificial intelligence, in addition to the expansion of contracts for basic sanitation companies,” added Sauaia.

The event was attended by Adriana Sambiase, executive manager of registrations and contracts at CCEE, Arthur da Silva Santa Rosa, executive manager of procedures and development of operations at ONS (National Electric System Operator), and Senator Irajá Silvestre Filho, among others.
