O ONS (National Electric System Operator) reported this Friday (04) that two new transmission lines entered into operation early in Brazil, with the aim of increasing the flow limit of energy generated in the Bahia.
This could increase the power flow capacity in the western region of the state by 500 MW to 2500 MW, depending on the scenario. The measure aims to help reduce the load on other equipment on the power grid, reducing the need to cut generation from renewable sources.
These cuts, known as curtailment, increased significantly last year, resulting in wasted energy and billions in losses for solar and wind power generation companies.
The ONS explained that the curtailments They occur for several reasons, such as limitations in the capacity to flow energy through the transmission network, the need to guarantee the reliability of the energy supply and insufficient consumption to absorb the electricity supply at a given time.
Damage caused by curtailment
A study released by the consultancy Volt Robotics revealed that more than 1,4 solar and wind power plants suffered cuts in energy generation by order of the ONS in 2024. Financial losses exceed R$1,6 billion, with more than 14,6 TWh of average energy cut.
In total, 400 hours of generation were interrupted, with the Northeast being the most impacted region, accumulating 330 hours. Bahia, as well as Ceará and Rio Grande do Norte, were the most affected states, as shown in the report below:
