O commodity price that make up a photovoltaic system is an factor of extremely high relevance in the international market, since the variation in the value of the main raw materials directly affects the CAPEX and the attractiveness of solar energy projects around the world.

Currently, only the polysilicon, for example, represents about 60% of the final cost of photovoltaic modules traded globally, which means that keeping up with the volatility of its price is essential to understand market trends.

Despite this, data published in bulletins weekly InfoLink Consultingg, to which the Canal Solar has exclusive access, show that the average price of polysilicon sold internationally has been stagnant since the beginning of the year.

The average value for purchasing the input began in the first week of January costing US$21,50/kg. Since then, the price has remained unchanged at the same level.

According to a Eduard Krummenauer, country manager of Helius Sunlink PV, stabilization of input prices occurs due to relatively stable demand and a reduction in production by several companies around the world.

For September, the professional highlights that the trend should not change: the price of polysilicon should remain stable, with the possibility of a slight increase.

“As an operational strategy, some producers are taking advantage of the low prices to carry out early preventive maintenance, decommissioning old and inefficient lines and also taking advantage of the situation to lay off staff around the world,” he explained.

The executive also commented that the price of wafer shows a slight upward trend for September. “However, due to the high level of stocks of some cell producers, I do not see this price increase being passed on in the first half of September by cell manufacturers,” he stressed.

From the executive's point of view, prices should remain stable until inventory levels are low enough to trigger a price increase.

“What I see happening today is the consolidation of companies, both in cell manufacturing and in module assembly and indirectly in product distribution in Brazil. In China, we are already noticing some module assemblers and cell manufacturers having financial problems due to the cash burn in 2024,” said Krummenauer.
