The report published by British research company EnAppSys shows that Europe reached record levels of energy generation from renewable sources in the second half of 2019. Energy generated by renewable sources in this period was 245,8 TWh, which corresponds to 31% of energy demand on the continent. This amount of energy already exceeds generation using fossil fuels by 21,3%.
Part of this new record is due to the addition of 18 GW of solar and wind sources in 2018, totaling 189 GW of wind plants and 114 GW of installed solar plants. Meanwhile, thermal power generation from coal and lignite plants has fallen by 33% since 2015.
The report was generated based on data from the body that operates the continent's transmission network (European Network of Transmission System Operators for Electricity – ENTSO-E), containing information from the 36 countries on the continent.
