Os solar energy systems with batteries should cause a great revolution in the Brazilian DG market (distributed generation), according to review by Hélvio Guerra, director of ANEEL (National Electric Energy Agency).

Em exclusive interview granted à Magazine Canal Solar, executive said what do you storage systems not only mitigate the problem of source intermittency, but also enable users to absorb or inject energy according to needs of the system, facilitating operation and making service provision cheaper for society as a whole.

During the conversation, the director of the Agency also spoke on other topics related to solar energy, such as what are, according to him, the main regulatory challenges of the source, how the entity sees the role of self-generation of energy in the Brazilian energy context and how climate change has influenced the guidelines of ANEEL.

Check out some excerpts from the interview below.

What are the main regulatory challenges for the expansion of solar energy in the country?

For solar sources to continue to play a leading role in the national energy scenario, they must be sustainable from an economic point of view.

Currently, the expansion of this source is driven by tariff subsidies, borne by other sectors of society.

However, according to data from the Subsidiometer of ANEEL, tariff subsidies represented more than R$40 billion in 2023, equivalent, on average, to more than 13% of the tariff paid by residential consumers.

Considering the need to review this model, and that solar generation has reached a satisfactory level of maturity, it is time to make this source economically sustainable so that it continues to grow and bring benefits.

Distributed generation, especially solar, has gained prominence. As ANEEL How do you see the role of this modality in the Brazilian energy context?

The popularization of distributed generation was a pleasant surprise that we have witnessed in Brazil in recent years. As a developing country, it is important to have continuous expansion of our energy matrix.

And, in this movement, we cannot move away from environmental sustainability and decarbonization commitments.

Even though we are a country that already had one of the cleanest electrical matrices in the world, from 2001 to 2023 we managed to almost triple our generation capacity, further increasing the share of renewable and low-carbon sources.

It is an unprecedented feat in the world, an objective that several countries seek to achieve and that we are already achieving in Brazil.

In this scenario, distributed generation plays a preponderant role, as it guarantees this expansion with renewable sources.

According to the Ten-Year Energy Plan 2032, the growth of distributed generation will continue at excellent levels, demonstrating the importance of this generation modality.

Energy storage technology, such as batteries, has come into its own. As ANEEL Do you see the integration of these systems with solar projects?

The popularization of storage systems and their association with solar systems will cause a revolution as big as the one we have seen with distributed generation.

Storage systems mitigate the problem of solar source intermittency, and, with adequate economic signals, users can be encouraged to absorb or inject energy according to systemic needs, facilitating operation and making service provision cheaper for the entire society.

It will be a win-win relationship, in which solar systems with storage will have additional revenues from ancillary services, and the system will have lower operating and expansion costs.

For this to happen, we must ensure that electricity tariffs are capable of giving the correct signals.

A ANEEL has already been developing studies in this regard, and has promoted tariff sandboxes to test tariff configurations that are more in line with this emerging reality.

All of this already happened in developed countries at least a decade ago. Here it became new.

    Excellent article

Excellent article that helps us understand the reality of the solar energy scenario and presents us with a promising perspective for storing energy that can be better used.
However, we need state policies that encourage the market to invest correctly so that the fruits of this work are best for society.
Technologies are ahead of those who can collaborate with business investors, and that is the question for us to make the lives of those in need healthier by taking advantage of solar abundance, a gift from the Creator.
