Neoenergia reported that it recycled more than 34 tons of photovoltaic modules from the implementation of the Neoenergia Luzia solar park, located in the interior of Paraíba. The initiative follows the principles of circular economy, with almost 82% of the panel components recycled – which allowed raw materials, such as aluminum and glass, to return to the production chain of their respective materials.
This prevented the emission of 26 tons of CO2 – equivalent to the average absorption capacity of 1,45 trees throughout their life cycle. The initiative also prevented the disposal of 98 m³ of materials in landfills, an amount equivalent to 98 thousand-liter water tanks.
Daniel Daibert, Superintendent of Environment and Land at Neoenergia, explains that when a company invests in recycling and material reuse solutions, it not only helps to reduce the environmental impacts of its projects but also encourages the development of a more efficient and responsible production model for the energy sector.
He also recalls that, according to estimates by IRENA (International Renewable Energy Agency), more than 78 million tons of photovoltaic modules will be discarded by 2050. “This reality encouraged (our) employees to create a solution making the production process even more sustainable and generating value for the entire sector and for society”, highlighted Daibert.
The recycling process at the Paraíba park was divided into four stages: collection, transportation, processing and disposal. The action was supported by SunR, a company specialized in reconditioning photovoltaic systems and plants.
Solar park
Opened in March 2023, the Neoenergia Luzia It is Neoenergia's first park for centralized photovoltaic generation, whose production is destined for ACL (Free Contracting Environment). The project's installed capacity is 149,3 MWp, enough energy to supply more than 100 homes. The location of the photovoltaic plants aims to enhance the operational synergy of the company's businesses.
The project is part of the Neoenergia Renewable Complex, which forms a wind and solar energy generation of Neoenergia Chafariz and Neoenergia Luzia, respectively. The parks are connected to the SIN (National Interconnected System) via the Neoenergia Santa Luzia II substation and the respective transmission line.
