The construction of a solar plant at the Muttsee dam in Switzerland – the highest in Europe, located at 2.500 meters above sea level – was approved by the Swiss authorities. Work will begin in the summer of 2021.
According to Axpo, the Swiss company responsible for the project, the plant will have an installed capacity of 2 MW and annual electricity production of 2,7 GWh.
It is planned to install 6.000 photovoltaic solar modules that will cover an area of 10.000 square meters on the south side of the dam.
The lower temperatures, which increase the performance of the plates, the reflective effect of snow and the absence of fog are some of the favorable conditions identified for the installation of the plant.
Another advantage is the fact that this new project can take advantage of the hydroelectric transmission network, Linthal 15, which works as a type of “battery” that balances the fluctuations of solar and wind energy sources integrated into Europe's energy grid.
According to Swisssolar, an association that represents photovoltaic solar energy companies in Switzerland, the country needs 50 GW to meet its consumption sustainably in the future. Therefore, the construction of the vertical solar plant at the Muttsee dam can help in the country's energy transformation.
