The CMSE (Electric Sector Monitoring Committee) approved, in an extraordinary meeting held this Thursday (6), the creation of a working group to discuss strategies that can minimize cuts in renewable energy generation in Brazil, the so-called curtailment.
The aim is to find solutions to reduce the waste of electricity from solar and wind power plants, whose production has been limited by restrictions in the national electricity system.
The group should act on fronts such as reinforcing the transmission infrastructure and bringing forward network expansion works, especially in the Northeast region – which concentrates a large part of the centralized generation projects in the country.
The group will be led by the Electric Energy Secretariat of the MME (Ministry of Mines and Energy) and will include the participation of regulatory bodies and entities in the sector, including:
- ANEEL (National Electric Energy Agency);
- EPE (Energy Research Company);
- ONS (National Electric System Operator);
- CCEE (Electric Energy Trading Chamber).
According to the MME, electricity sector associations and private companies will be able to contribute suggestions to the working group.
Although there is still no set deadline for the final decision on measures to mitigate power cuts, the expectation is that the work will be completed within six months.
Power generators push for immediate solutions
Over the last year, companies in the energy sector have been warning of the need for urgent measures, as the cut in production from wind and solar plants has become a problem that has caused significant financial losses.
A study by the consultancy Volt Robotics, for example, revealed that more than 1,4 solar and wind power plants suffered cuts in energy generation by order of the ONS (National Electric System Operator) in 2024.
Financial losses exceed R$1,6 billion, with more than 14,6 TWh of average energy cut. In total, more than 400 thousand hours of generation were interrupted, with the Northeast being the most impacted region, accumulating 330 thousand hours.
What is curtailment?
The term curtailment refers to the forced reduction of energy generation by order of the ONS – which states that the measure is adopted to guarantee the safety and stability of the electrical grid when the instantaneous supply exceeds the consumption of the without (National Interconnected System).
The adoption of strategies to mitigate curtailment has been discussed by the sector, especially in light of the advancement of renewable sources and the need to ensure greater efficiency in the use of energy generated in the country.
