In recent years, solar energy projects in the GC (centralized generation) segment have gained great prominence in the Brazilian electricity matrix, driven by billion-dollar investments, technological advances and the growing interest in clean and renewable sources.
However, at the same time as it grows, the sector faces important structural challenges, such as generation cuts (curtailment), transmission bottlenecks and the need for new regulations that guarantee greater predictability for investors.
In an interview with the Magazine Canal Solar, Carlos Longo, Director of Regulation and Commercialization at SPIC Brasil – one of the largest global companies in the electricity sector – reported that companhia is looking at new opportunities in the energy storage sector and sees the battery auctions planned by the Federal Government as an important step towards providing greater security and flexibility to the national electricity system.
The company, however, advocates the creation of a regulatory framework that makes this type of investment viable in Brazil. The executive also detailed how the company has dealt with the impact of curtailment and explained why the expansion of the transmission network is currently one of the main bottlenecks for renewable energy in the country.
The director of SPIC Brasil also spoke about the company's perspectives regarding the advancement of the Free Energy Market in the country, the high cost of financing new projects and the role that batteries can play in building a more resilient and sustainable electrical system.
