Based on meteorological projections indicating an increase in the frequency and intensity of extreme weather events between September and November, Copel (Companhia Paranaense de Energia) has intensified its operational planning to address the expected impacts of the so-called Super El Niño on the Paraná state electrical system.
The utility company is preparing measures aimed at reducing response time and restoring power supply in emergency situations.
According to forecasts presented by experts from Climatempo during a meeting promoted by the company, the South of the country is expected to face above-average rainfall, with a risk of flooding, storms accompanied by strong winds, hail, and even tornadoes.
The expectation is that November will see the most severe episodes, with rainfall totals significantly higher than average in different regions of Paraná.
Rio Bonito Experience
To reduce the impact of these events on the power grid, Copel reports that it has been strengthening coordination between its operations, infrastructure, and field service areas.
The strategy includes the use of weekly weather forecasts, continuous monitoring of weather conditions through Simepar, and advance planning for the deployment of teams and resources to areas with the highest risk of occurrence.
The company also highlights preventive actions already underway, such as inspections and pruning of trees near distribution networks, since contact with vegetation accounts for a significant portion of interruptions caused by external factors.
In the first half of the year, 571 trees were inspected and 257 pruning services were carried out, while the service structure currently has 552 heavy crews, bringing together more than 3 professionals for network reconstruction when necessary.
As a reference for planning, the company cites its performance during the tornado that hit Rio Bonito do Iguaçu in 2025, when approximately 200 professionals rebuilt 11 kilometers of power lines and replaced 350 poles in four days of work. This experience was incorporated into the protocols adopted for situations with a major impact on electrical infrastructure.
Debate on resilience
The preparatory actions precede a workshop on extreme events that will be promoted by Copel on August 12th. The meeting will take place before the seminar of ANEEL (National Electric Energy Agency), scheduled for August 20th in Brasília (DF), dedicated to the resilience of the electricity sector in the face of Super El Niño.
