The Cubatão Water Treatment Plant (ETA) in Palhoça (SC) will receive the installation of a solar energy system starting this year. The technology is expected to start operating in September, with an annual savings of up to R$300 thousand, the equivalent of R$3 million in a decade.
This corresponds to 48% of the energy spent by the unit, which has a capacity for 180 million liters of treated water and which supplies five municipalities in the Metropolitan Region of Santa Catarina.
The investment made is R$ 1,3 million, with the contract for the implementation of solar panels and other equipment having been signed by CASAN (Companhia Catarinense de Águas e Saneamento) with the company B&F Solar. The expectation is that the amount invested (payback) will be returned within five years.
The initiative will also serve as a pilot project for other sanitation company stations in the state.
“CASAN spends around R$137 million annually on electricity alone. This corresponds to 9,2% of all company expenses. It only loses in value for the payroll”, explains Guilherme Campos, manager of operational policies at the company.
Annual generation
According to CASAN, the photovoltaic system at the Cubatão WTP will be installed in an area of high sunlight, generating up to 577.090 kWh of annual energy.
This is equivalent to the annual consumption of 320 affordable homes in the South of Brazil, according to data from IPEA (Institute of Applied Economic Research).
As it is clean and renewable energy, the company will be free of tariffs for 25 years, without the incidence of tariff flags.
Solar energy will also minimize the impact caused by the company's carbon emissions, resulting from the consumption of energy generated in other locations.
The initiative is part of the company's strategy to meet the goals of the Santa Catarina SDG Movement, of which it became a signatory in 2021.
The movement seeks to fulfill the so-called 2030 Agenda of ONU (United Nations), which includes increasing the global use of renewable energy as one of its main objectives.
