UFABC (Federal University of ABC) has completed the implementation of an energy efficiency project on its two campuses — located in Santo André and São Bernardo do Campo, in the ABC Paulista region.

The initiative had an investment of approximately R$ 3 million and was made possible through the Energy Efficiency Program of ANEEL (National Electric Energy Agency), within the scope of the Public Call for Projects (CPP/2022).

The actions included the installation of photovoltaic solar energy generation systems and the replacement of more than 12 lamps with LED models. The measures are estimated to result in annual savings of more than 1.000 MWh.

On the Santo André campus, the project included the complete modernization of internal and external lighting, improvements to the air conditioning systems and the installation of a 125,58 kWp photovoltaic system. On the São Bernardo do Campo campus, the lighting in classrooms, laboratories and parking was updated, and the unit now has an 87,36 kWp solar system.

During the ceremony, the rector of UFABC, Dacio Roberto Matheus, highlighted the role of internal teams in making the project viable, with special mention to the University City Hall and the Works Superintendence, who worked directly in implementing the improvements.

According to him, the university was able to expand the scope of the initiative by transforming it into a practical teaching and research platform. “We brought together a faculty, technical staff and students capable of transforming an energy efficiency project into a living laboratory for our students and researchers. This generates benefits for UFABC, for Enel and, most importantly, for society. The management model we were able to implement here is exemplary and we want to continue counting on this partnership in new projects,” he commented.

According to Matheus, in addition to energy savings, the implemented systems will be used to support teaching and research activities, contributing to the academic training of students and the development of new studies in the electrical sector.

Enel Distribuição São Paulo, responsible for implementing the project, reinforced that the initiative is in line with the company's commitment to energy efficiency and innovation, and that projects like this promote positive impacts both for the institutions served and for society in general.

Enel SP's Energy Efficiency Program, created in 1998, has already allocated approximately R$1,1 billion to 438 projects, focusing on conscious energy consumption, modernization of facilities and educational activities. The works are regulated by Aneel and executed according to the program's guidelines.
