Amid the conflict in Ukraine, a solar power project in Nikolaev, carried out by local EPC company BlockMaster Ukraine in partnership with KSTAR, is bringing energy security to the region.

In September 2024, a 5 MW solar plant was completed – designed to meet local needs in a city where grid instability, exacerbated by war, poses technical and operational challenges.

According to the company, the local grid required inverters that could precisely regulate frequency and voltage. Therefore, the system had to manage large fluctuations:

  • Frequency control with a discrepancy of 0,1 Hz;
  • Voltage control with 1 volt discrepancy.

Additionally, delivering equipment amidst war presented logistical and security challenges, requiring rapid deployment and flexibility. “The project owners needed to be confident that the system could be operated and maintained efficiently despite the conflict and local uncertainties,” KSTAR explained.

Applied solutions

The manufacturer supplied its GSM5000D-MV Turnkey Container Inverter System Solution, with two 2 MWac Central Inverters, designed to support the unique operational challenges of a conflict zone. Among the advantages of the equipment, listed by the manufacturer, are:

  • Precise frequency and voltage regulation, ensuring that the system remains stable despite fluctuations in the local network;
  • Efficient integration with the local grid, essential to maintain consistency in energy supply in the region;
  • Robust inverter design capable of handling operational demands even in high-risk environments.

O&M (Operation and Maintenance) Support

KSTAR also said it played a key role in ensuring the system’s successful operation and long-term maintenance. Given the complexities of the region, the company deployed specialized support to help, together with EPC partner BlockMaster, overcome the following challenges:

  • Remote plant monitoring: The technical team provided 24/7 remote support to monitor project performance, offering immediate troubleshooting and adjustments when necessary;
  • On-site expertise and maintenance: Despite the logistical and security challenges posed by the war, KSTAR service engineers visited the site to ensure a smooth installation and provide hands-on training for the local team, ensuring they were well equipped to manage the project independently;
  • Proactive maintenance schedules: With the unpredictable nature of the environment, the company helped develop a proactive maintenance plan, ensuring the system remained operational without interruption.

Results

Among the main results obtained with the installation of the 5 MW plant, with the solutions and services offered by KSTAR, are:

  • Continuous power stability: (the inverters) the GSM5000D-MV Turnkey solution and its Central Inverters maintained reliable operation despite local grid fluctuations;
  • Uninterrupted operation: thanks to the company's continuous support, the photovoltaic project did not suffer major interruptions, contributing to energy resilience in the area;
  • Greater local energy security, reducing dependence on less reliable energy sources in times of crisis.
