On the eve of The smarter E Europe, the largest fair for the energy industry in Europe, the winners of The smarter E AWARD 2024 were announced at an official ceremony at the International Congress Center München, in Munich, Germany.
For the first time, the prize was awarded in five categories: Photovoltaics, Energy Storage, E-Mobility, Smart Integrated Energy and Notable Projects.
O Canal Solar was present and attended the awards ceremony. Check out the companies that won awards in the five categories below.
Photovoltaics
A ArcelorMittal was awarded his BIPV solution (photovoltaic energy integrated into buildings) Helioroof. The product combines steel-based cover panels with monocrystalline TOPCon cells and a protective plastic film.
They are prefabricated in varying lengths, from two to twelve meters, and can deliver up to 2,17 kWp. According to ArcelorMittal, the absence of glass and mounting frames makes them up to 50% lighter and 40% faster to install than conventional photovoltaic systems.
The German company NexWafe was awarded for the production of solar cells with its EpiNex wafers, produced by direct Gas-to-Wafer technology. According to the company, they can be as thin as 50 microns, less than half the thickness of conventionally manufactured wafers.
Also according to NexWafe, these wafers would reduce silicon loss by 90%, energy consumption by 60% and production costs by 50%.
A manufacturer SMA was also awarded in the Photovoltaic Energy category with the Sunny Central FLEX, which provides an interface between large-scale photovoltaic plants, the electrical grid and battery storage systems.
The solution combines a DC-DC converter, an inverter, a medium voltage transformer and a circuit breaker in a single 40-foot container. According to SMA, the equipment allows DC coupling of battery storage systems, improves efficiency and reduces costs.
Furthermore, it is one of the first large-scale central inverter platforms for large-scale solar projects to use silicon carbide technology and improves heat management and achieves DC-DC conversion efficiency of up to 99,5%.
Energy Storage
A ESS Inc., from the USA, stood out with the Energy Center, a modular iron flow battery with a storage capacity of 1,16 MWh. This modular system is designed for a variety of commercial and grid-connected applications.
According to the company, the system does not require refrigeration and offers unlimited cycles without degradation. Additionally, this system can deliver 145 kW of power for eight hours or can be set to last for twelve hours.
A Pfannenberg Europe GmbH, from Germany, won with the Compact Chiller VLV 12, an intelligent thermal solution for battery systems, providing 12 kW of cooling capacity in various environmental conditions.
A sonnen GmbH was recognized for sonnenPro FlexStack, a modular energy storage system for commercial and industrial applications, with a storage capacity ranging from 110 kWh to 495 kWh.
E-Mobility
A Designwerk Technologies, from Switzerland, has developed a containerized battery charging system that allows heavy electric vehicles to be charged at a megawatt rate, suitable for locations with grid connection limitations.
A EcoG, from Germany, presented a dynamic switching matrix that connects power modules with charging points for electric vehicles, improving efficiency and reducing the costs of installing charging stations.
A Apollo Power, from Israel, has developed flexible solar modules for commercial vehicles, such as trucks and buses, helping to reduce carbon emissions and improve energy efficiency.
Smart Integrated Energy
A CyberGrid, from Austria, created the CyberNoc platform, which allows the aggregation, administration and monetization of renewable energy systems, facilitating the creation of virtual plants and optimizing the management of decentralized energy portfolios.
A dvlp.energy, from Germany, has developed a platform that combines satellite data with AI-based tools to identify ideal locations for new solar, wind and battery projects, accelerating the planning of renewable energy projects.
The Mobility House, also from Germany, created a platform that facilitates the commercialization of large-scale battery storage systems, allowing participation in energy markets and increasing the useful life of used batteries.
Notable Projects
A IO-Dynamics was recognized for its last-mile electrification project, which implemented charging infrastructure at 18 warehouse locations to power 1 electric delivery trucks, optimizing charging efficiency.
A MaxSolar stood out with its innovation project in Bundorf, which includes a 125 MWp solar park, providing green energy to 37.500 homes and promoting local biodiversity.
A Red Sea Global, from Saudi Arabia, developed The Red Sea Destination project, a luxury resort powered by an off-grid solar system, setting new standards for sustainable tourism.
