The Edgard de Souza Dam, located on the Tietê River near the municipality of Santana de Parnaíba, São Paulo, will once again produce electricity for the National Interconnected System (SIN). This function was changed in 1952, when it began operating as a pumping station, which was deactivated in 1982.

The owner of the project, EMAE (Metropolitan Water and Energy Company), was one of the winners of the A-5 New Energy Auction, which took place on August 22, to meet the demand of distribution companies.

By successfully selling energy during the event, EMAE was able to make the dam motorized, which now functions exclusively for flood control in the São Paulo Metropolitan Region.

Originally built as a hydroelectric plant in 1901 by the former Light, the complex had a capacity of only 500 kW. The installation will have a capacity of 18 MW, which is equivalent to meeting the electricity consumption of 65 residential units in a city the size of São Caetano, São Paulo.

The planned investment in the future PCH (Small Hydroelectric Power Plant) is R$200 million, according to the company. The rules of the A-5 Auction establish the start of energy supply for January 1, 2030.
EMAE's forecast, however, is that the PCH will be completed early. This is because, in addition to the dam, there is already a reservoir and part of the powerhouse.

The operation, according to calculations, should begin in 2028, which will allow EMAE to make energy available to the free market until the contractual start of service to the SIN, two years later.

According to EMAE, the project will contribute to strengthening the energy security of a relevant economic region, including the city of São Paulo.
