A ANEEL (National Electric Energy Agency) approved the request of ISA CTEEP, an electric power transmission company, for the project implementation with FACTS technology to make it more flexible and stabilize the transmission system.
FACTS technology (Flexible Alternating Current Transmission Systems or Flexible Alternating Current Transmission Systems, in free translation), has the system Smart Valves ou smart valves, in free translation.
In the opinion of Claudio Domingorena, executive director of regulation, strategy and innovation at ISA CTEEP, FACTS technologies of the M-SSSC type (Modular – Static Synchronous Series Compensator or Modular Series Synchronous Static Compensator, in free translation) play an important role in supporting the energy transition, as allow to accelerate the integration of renewable sources into the electrical system, especially with the exponential growth of distributed renewable generation.
“In addition to optimizing network operation,, this solution offers a shorter installation time with minimal environmental impact, since it can be implemented within the limits of existing substations. This results in greater safety, resilience and flexibility for the system, both in the short and long term”, he explains.

According to the publication of ANEEL, the function of system is to generate greater flexibility and stability to the transmission system when it redirects the flow of energy from overloaded circuits to idle ones, avoiding the need for conventional works, such as rebuilding transmission lines.
The initiative aims to contribute to the energy transition by enabling the rapid integration of renewable sources into the electricity system. For the general director of ANEEL, Sandoval Feitosa, the use of new technologies is part of the Agency's agenda and renews the commitment to the evolution of the sector.
The studies of the the project were carried out, during two years, by the company together with EPE (Energy Research Company) and the ONS (National System Operator).
It is expected to be temporarily installed in the first half of 2025 at the Ribeirão Preto substation. (SP), due to the industrial demand for electricity in the region. It will then be permanently transferred to the substations Votuporanga and Sao Jose do Rio Preto, also in Sao Paulo, in 2027.
“The expectation is that, over the next few years, the use of this solution will become more common in the country, allowing flexible, efficient and sustainable operation of the electrical system”, says Guilherme Zanetti, director of planning and granting of transmission and distribution of electrical energy and international interconnections at the MME (Ministry of Mines and Energy).
“With this anticipated resource in the Ribeirão Preto region, for example, we will be able to relieve the system, anticipating the benefits of economic development for the local population”, he concludes.
The estimated investment is around R$ 75 million for the first phase in the Ribeirão Preto region, with an additional cost of R $ million 15 for the transportation and permanent installation of equipment in the second phase, covering the region of Votuporanga and São José do Rio Preto.
“The agenda of the ANEEL is modernization, digitalization and use of new technologies, hence the importance of authorization for ISA CTEEP to install FACTS devices, based on the new SSSC technology, for power flow control, a pioneering action in the country”, comments Feitosa.
"We are convinced that this new technology will allow an optimization of the transmission system, with postponement of investments, lower overall cost of alternatives and the possibility of using equipment in other locations in the system”, he states.
“The Authorization issued today renews the commitment of ANEEL with the evolution of the sector, to ensure the continued insertion of renewable sources, reinforcing the contribution of the electricity sector in the energy transition”, adds Feitosa.
“We are very proud to be pioneers in the use of M-SSSC type FACTS technology in the national electricity sector, contributing to a more flexible network ready for the increasing insertion of renewable energy sources”, says Rui Chammas, CEO of ISA CTEEP.
“We are confident that this step will pave the way for the application of other technologiess that will benefit society. And this was only possible thanks to the fundamental support of EPE, ONS, MME (Ministry of Mines and Energy) and ANEEL”, adds the CEO.
During the ceremony the Superintendent of Concessions, Permits and Authorizations for Electric Energy Services, Ludimila Lima, highlighted the importance of bringing technologies like this to Brazil.
“The company approached us with this proposed solution. We quickly understood the importance of having this technology here in Brazil, considering the complexity of our electrical system, especially with the arrival of renewable sources and the great demand for investments”, says the superintendent.
