A ANEEL The Brazilian Electric Energy Agency (Agência Nacional de Energia Elétrica) has authorized the start of operations of small hydroelectric plants (SHPs) in the southern region of the country. The authorizations cover both the commercial launch and testing of the new plants, strengthening the regional electricity matrix.
The authorizations are part of the process of expanding distributed renewable generation and are intended for projects that have completed their technical inspection and operational safety verification stages. The initiative contributes to diversifying the energy supply and reducing pressure on the interconnected system.
With the new units coming into operation, the South expands its participation in the small-scale hydroelectric generation segment, considered strategic for local supply and system stability.
A ANEEL should continue with new analyses of similar requests in the coming weeks, boosting investment in the renewable energy sector.
What are small hydroelectric plants?
SHPs These are plants that generate energy from the force of water, but on a smaller scale than a traditional hydroelectric plant. In Brazil, they have a capacity of between 5 and 30 MW and a smaller reservoir, which causes less environmental impact.
