BNDES (National Bank for Economic and Social Development) confirmed this Monday (15) that it has the financial capacity to support energy storage systems that are contracted in the LRCAP (Capacity Reserve Auction in the form of Power) of 2026.
The announcement was made during a workshop held at the institution's headquarters in Rio de Janeiro (RJ), which brought together agents from the electricity sector to discuss local content rules and financing mechanisms for building energy storage systems (BESS).
The auction, scheduled to take place between December 2nd and 4th, is considered a milestone for the Brazilian electricity sector as it inaugurates the structured contracting of batteries on a large scale in the country.
The expectation is that storage systems will contribute to increasing the operational flexibility and reliability of the SIN (National Interconnected System).
As previously reported, the The proposal under discussion by the Government foresees the holding of two independent competitions. One is intended for projects that meet the minimum local content requirements, and the other is open to broad competition, regardless of the origin of the equipment.
The Climate Fund will be the main source of resources.
During the meeting held this Monday (15) in partnership with ABSAE (Brazilian Association of Energy Storage Solutions), BNDES informed that the Climate Fund will be the main financing mechanism for storage projects contracted in LRCAP, with a financial cost of 6,5% per year.
For 2026, the budget currently available for the Climate Fund is R$ 27 billion, which could reach R$ 34 billion with authorization from the Federal Government and approval from the National Congress.
Despite the availability of resources, the bank informed that the final sizing of the credit lines will depend on the storage capacity contracted in the auction and the regulatory definitions that are still under analysis by the MME (Ministry of Mines and Energy).
Innovation pipeline aims to nationalize the supply chain.
In addition to the Climate Fund, BNDES intends to use the BNDES Mais Inovação line of credit to stimulate technological development and encourage the strengthening of the national battery production chain.
According to bank representatives, the line of credit could play a significant role in stimulating technological development and strengthening the national battery production chain.
Regarding local content, ABSAE informed... Canal Solar The criteria for accessing financing have already been defined by BNDES. The rules stipulate the mandatory inclusion of certain strategic items and a minimum local content percentage of 15%, with a gradual increase in subsequent years.
The bank expects that the local content policy will contribute to the gradual development of a national energy storage chain, reducing dependence on imported equipment and expanding productive investments in the country.
