Accumulated losses due to cuts in solar and wind power generation — a phenomenon known as curtailment — already exceed 19,83 million MWh in Brazil, according to a study by ePowerBay.

The document was prepared based on data from CCEE (Electric Energy Commercialization Chamber) and ONS (National Electric System Operator).

In June alone, approximately 1,95 million MWh of energy were not generated due to structural or operational limitations of the system — an increase of 10,9% compared to the previous month.

The data shows that reliability constraints (CNF), such as equipment failures or preventive maintenance, lead the accumulated total, with more than 8,5 million MWh, which represents 43% of losses.

Cuts due to energy restrictions (ENE) were responsible for 7,2 million MWh (36%), while events linked to electrical unavailability (REL) — such as bottlenecks in the grid or lack of capacity — totaled 4,1 million MWh (21%).

According to the study, the situation highlights the urgent need to modernize transmission infrastructure and improve systemic planning for renewable expansion in Brazil, especially given the accelerated growth of solar and wind generation in recent years.

According to ePowerBay, between 2021 and 2025, centralized solar generation capacity grew 313%, jumping from 4,6 GW to 19 GW. Wind power expanded 66,2%, reaching 34,9 GW.

Most affected substations and sets

The survey indicates that the Açu III, João Câmara III and Monte Verde substations, all located in Rio Grande do Norte, concentrated the largest volumes of energy cuts in the accumulated total, with losses exceeding 1 million MWh each.

Among the most impacted wind and solar complexes are:

  • Janaúba, in Minas Gerais;
  • Monte Verde and Serra do Mel, in Rio Grande do Norte;
  • Cashew, in Bahia;
  • Orange trees and New Horizon, in Ceara.
