Starting July 24, 2025, humanity officially entered ecological overdraft. The date marked Earth Overshoot Day, the point at which the consumption of natural resources exceeds the planet's capacity to regenerate them in the same year.
Calculated by Environmental NGO Global Footprint Network, the milestone represents a worsening of the global scenario. In 2023, depletion occurred on August 2. In 2024, on August 1. Now, almost a week earlier, indicating the continued advance of human pressure on natural systems.
Early overload
The organization claims that the global population is using Earth's resources as if it had 1,8 planets at its disposal. For comparison purposes, if all of humanity consumed as much as Brazil does, 1,5 planets would be needed. At the rate of the United States, the planet would need the equivalent of five Earths per year.
"The date has come early, and the damage has accumulated. We've been living in the ecological red for over 15 years," the NGO stated. This early date is primarily caused by excessive CO₂ emissions, intensive freshwater use, accelerated deforestation and fishing, and the oceans' ability to recover.
Exclusive
Earth Overshoot Day is calculated by dividing the planet's regenerative capacity by humanity's demand for natural resources. The result, multiplied by 365, indicates the date we enter the ecological red.
