The Minister of Mines and Eenergy, Alexandre Silveira, reported that sent a letter to ANEEL (National Electric Energy Agency) requesting a reassessment of the use of the Flag Account balance, with the aim of reducing the impact of tariff flags on the energy bill.
“I sent a letter to ANEEL "Because I believe that it should reevaluate how much it needs to keep in the Flag Account to ensure a safety cushion in case of water difficulties. However, I understand that the distributors' cash values should not be so high, which could reduce the impact on Brazilians' energy bills," said Silveira.
The minister spoke to the press this Wednesday (02) after participating in an event in Foz do Iguaçu (PR). The ministry leads the G20 Brazil Energy Transitions Working Group, with the theme “Seeking consensus on performance-based sustainability assessments and frameworks”. The discussions will continue until Friday (04), when the ministerial meeting will be held.
The Flag Account is a fund that collects amounts from the yellow and red tariff flags. Until July, the accumulated balance was R$5,2 billion, and it is likely that these values have increased. “I hope that the directors of ANEEL act with the responsibility they claim to have when deciding how much Brazilians and our economy will pay for energy,” said Silveira.
The minister criticized the ANEEL, accusing the Agency of acting against the country and the government. He stated that the Agency has been reactive in relation to the government's public policies, demonstrating an undue politicization of an institution that should be technical.
“If it aligns itself with the government, I will be happy. If it continues to be an agency against the country and the government, I will be very worried. But I will not stop defending the interests of the Brazilian people,” said Silveira.
ANEEL announces red flag level 2 in October
In October, the ANEEL triggered red flag 2, which adds R$7,877 to every 100 kilowatt-hours (kWh) consumed. The factors that led to this change, according to the Agency, include the forecast of low inflow to hydroelectric reservoirs and the increase in the cost of energy.
After a sequence of green flags, which began in April 2022 and was interrupted in July 2024 with the yellow flag, the red flag, level 1, was activated in September.
