Occupational Safety Technician Day, an essential professional for ensuring safety during a company's processes, is celebrated this Wednesday (27).

In the energy sector, where installations involve height, electricity and are subject to adverse weather conditions, the Occupational Safety Technician is essential to ensure the protection of workers and the efficiency of projects.

These professionals are responsible for activities ranging from risk assessment in installation works, ensuring the correct use of PPE (Personal Protective Equipment), developing training and safety procedures, to supervising work at heights and in energized areas.

The presence of these professionals in the solar energy sector is also essential to guarantee the safety of the facilities and professionals involved in photovoltaic projects.

To Jota Saboia, Advanced Safety Technician for Health, Safety and Environment at FGA Soluções, participating in solar energy projects is challenging, from residential projects to solar plants.

“The challenges are to protect employees, from the initial documentation stage to the completion of the project. Each phase of the project has its own specific activities and risks. From the design phase to the commissioning and delivery of the plant to O&M, various risks are analyzed and mapped in various documents,” explains Sabóia.

“The biggest challenge is raising awareness about the proper use of PPE when faced with a high level of criticality, inspections of machines and equipment. Small daily notes, when resolved, bring safety to the work site”, adds the technician.

To ensure safety at work, measures are adopted with the aim of minimizing work accidents, occupational diseases, and protecting the physical and psychological integrity of workers.

Sabóia warns that, with the technologies we have for individual and collective protection equipment, fatal accidents on construction sites should be non-existent. “Unfortunately, this occurs due to a lack of procedures for each activity, lack of training, lack of risk perception and, most importantly, lack of attention from employees,” he comments.

“I believe that the future involves planting the seed of safety in people’s hearts. Taking care of the environment, taking care of human beings, knowing that every professional is a father or mother who needs to return home after work,” he adds.

As a solution, training is essential in transforming the safety culture. “Sometimes we don’t want to listen, but the occupational safety technician, who only wants the common good. To ensure that the greatest asset of any company can get home safely,” he emphasizes.

In addition to ensuring worker safety, these professionals also contribute to the efficiency and success of projects that transform the country's energy matrix.

“You can never have too much security!” concludes Sabóia.
