The United States plans to install 54 GW of battery power by the end of 2028.

Large-scale storage capacity is expected to exceed 100 GW in the country, driven by hybrid projects.

The United States is projected to add 54 GW of battery storage capacity to its electrical grid over the next two and a half years. This projection, released by the EIA (Energy Information Administration), considers projects reported by industry stakeholders.

Of this total, 14 GW are scheduled to come online in the second half of 2026. Another 26 GW are expected to be installed in 2027, while the remaining 14 GW are expected in 2028.

If the projects are completed on schedule, the United States' battery storage capacity could reach approximately 106 GW by the end of 2028. This means that installed capacity should more than double compared to current levels.

The country ended 2025 with 43,6 GW of batteries in operation. In the first six months of 2026 alone, 8,3 GW were added, raising the nominal capacity to almost 52 GW.

The expansion comes after three years of accelerated growth. Between 2023 and 2025, large-scale installed battery capacity grew by an average of 70% per year, according to... EIA.

Solar projects feature larger batteries.

The largest energy storage facilities in the United States are associated with photovoltaic solar power plants. One of the prime examples is the Bellefield Solar and Energy Storage Farm complex, located in California.

In operation since December 2025, the project combines 500 MW of solar generation with 500 MW of nominal storage capacity. The project foresees the duplication of both structures, reaching 1 GW of photovoltaic capacity and 1 GW in batteries.

The new phase is expected to be operational by November 2026. If the schedule is met, Bellefield will become the largest battery energy storage facility in the United States.

Currently, the second largest project is the Manatee Solar Energy Center in Florida. In operation since 2021, the complex has 75 MW of solar capacity and 409 MW of storage.

Another noteworthy project is the Gemini hybrid project in Nevada, which combines 690 MW of photovoltaic generation and 380 MW of storage. The batteries began operating in 2024.
