WEG will be GreenYellow's technology partner in implementing a behind-the-meter solar energy project in Brazil, which involves installing photovoltaic systems in 54 stores of the Carrefour Brazil Group.
The solution is based on the zero-grid concept, in which generation and consumption occur locally, reducing dependence on the electrical grid. With approximately 38 MWp of installed capacity, the project will consist of 54 photovoltaic systems, capable of generating around 56 GWh of energy per year.
The production is expected to meet, on average, more than 30% of the energy consumption of the participating units. The initiative should also prevent the emission of more than 2.000 tons of CO₂ per year, equivalent to planting 10 trees, contributing to the advancement of Carrefour Brazil's sustainability goals.
“This project demonstrates how the on-site solar generation model can be scaled up in Brazilian retail. The partnership with WEG combines experience in renewable energy, technology, and execution capacity to enable an efficient solution aligned with Carrefour's decarbonization goals,” stated Marcelo Xavier, CEO of GreenYellow Brazil.
WEG's participation in the initiative includes providing the technological infrastructure necessary for the deployment of photovoltaic systems. "This initiative demonstrates how technology, innovation, and partnership are fundamental to accelerating the energy transition," said Manfred Peter Johann, Vice President of Automation & Systems at WEG.
According to Fernando Oliveira, Commercial Director of GreenYellow, projects of this nature represent an evolution in the way energy is consumed in the country. "By bringing generation and consumption closer together, the behind-the-meter model increases the efficiency of the electrical system and optimizes the use of the energy generated," he pointed out.
Partners beyond Brazil
The partnership between GreenYellow and Carrefour is not limited to Brazil. In 2024, in France, the companies signed an agreement for the installation and operation of photovoltaic systems in approximately 350 parking lots of the group's hypermarkets and supermarkets.
The European project foresees the annual generation of 450 GWh of clean energy, equivalent to the consumption of a city of 200 inhabitants, with gradual implementation starting in 2025 and completion of half of the facilities by the end of 2026.
